Living in the ’80s!

If there’s one thing I’m famous for amongst my friends, it’s wanting to dress up at the drop of a hat, and planning elaborate parties in order to justify some ridiculous outfit I’ve dreamed up. So I thought I’d share these photos from our ’80s party last year, which we organised as part of the joint 30th birthday celebration between me and my friends, who were all born within a couple of months of each other. What better way to celebrate a landmark birthday than with a throwback party to the decade when you were born?!

Of course, Ray-bans were the big thing during the ’80s (have they ever really gone out of fashion since?!), so the first job was grabbing a pair of replicas from eBay.

Next, comes the big hair…

Polka dots and bright accessories:

I was channeling a pre-blonde Madonna here, of course…

I actually had two outfits for the weekend, but first was the small matter of hair and makeup:

Untitled

I thought I’d go subtle for the first day, so as not to scare people too badly…

Untitled

This is an authentic ’80s jumpsuit, complete with amazing power shoulder pads. The honest truth is I loved wearing this – it was comfy as heck and I thought it looked fantastic. Sadly, I don’t think the world is ready for a real ’80s revival just yet… I also bought these great electric blue snakeskin heels from New Look to complete the outfit. Unfortunately, at times, there was something slightly Michael Jackson-ish about my appearance:

Untitled

Day two was when I unleashed the full force of Madonna:

IMG_2377The Material Girl was in full swing!

My husband wore a tracksuit – he loves it so much he’s worn it multiple times since then, because as all children of the ’80s, he feels the lure of the tracksuit like a Siren’s call.

Untitled

I had on a tutu, but you can only really see it in this incredibly unflattering side view of me singing along to Blondie:

Untitled

But wait! What about the catering? Well, of course, that was a major aspect of the fun! Where would an ’80s party be without a trifle?

Untitled

And a pineapple and cheese hedgehog?

UntitledAnd potato waffles!:

Untitled

And a really awful photo of a Viennetta?!

Untitled

(When I was a kid, you knew it was a serious and important landmark event if there was Viennetta on the table!)

There also had to be quiche and vol au vents:

Untitled

And pink wafers, savoury mini eggs, and party rings!

Untitled

And, because why not, jello shots in the shape of lemon wedges!

Untitled

Sunday morning could only be cartoons and Pop Tarts time!

Untitled

It was great fun to relive our childhood days from a slightly different perspective, but I have to say my Pop Tart sugar rush was pretty intense…! I still can’t decide which ’80s outfit I liked the best, but it was definitely fun to research them and put them together. The first time round for me, the ’80s were all knee high socks, flowery skirts, and matching cardigans!

’40s curls by The Painted Lady

Before Christmas, I was lucky enough to win a competition for a vintage hair styling session by Belinda Hay at The Painted Lady in London. Belinda Hay literally wrote the book on vintage hair, so I was over the moon at the prospect! Unfortunately, due to the bad weather in January, I managed to miss my first appointment that I’d booked with her, but Belinda graciously allowed me to rebook – and so, yesterday, I finally got my hair did!

Untitled

As I won the competition by professing my love for Gil Elvgren’s curly haired beauties, I thought it was only right to request a similar look for my styling session. Belinda began by curling my hair using hot tongs and allowing it to cool in curl clips. Then, after a copious dousing in hairspray, the clips were removed, and the brushing out began! This is the bit that I’d probably have the most trouble with – after all, once you’ve spent so long pinning your hair up, it’s scary to take a brush to it. Knowing me, I’d brush all those curls out! However, Belinda’s expert touch and total confidence left me with gorgeous pin-up curls all day long (and they’re still in today!).

40s curls

Check out the back – such amazing waves! I told Belinda my hair only behaves for other people – but I’m getting better at giving my hair some gentle curls with heated rollers…

40s curls

(In case you wondered, I wore my NW3 Hobbs Annabel dress, Miss L Fire Monaco shoes, Monty Mouse earrings from Hobbs, and Audrey sunglasses from Jeepers Peepers (via ASOS). I’ve worn the Annabel dress so many times now, it’s starting to become my uniform…)

40s curls

Excuse the cheesy grin – I was pretty pleased with my hair!

40s curls

I also wore my trusty old coat from Next, which I bought a year ago from the outlet store in Gunwharf Quays after I totally misjudged the weather! Good buy in the end…

40s curls

In other news, I’m experiencing feelings of confusion about the upcoming summer months – on the one hand, I can’t wait for warmer weather, but on the other hand, I’ll probably have to retire my gorgeous shoes for a while… Hence wearing them as often as I can at the moment!

Visit The Painted Lady online here, or pop into the salon at 65 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, E2 7DJ. The phone number is 0207 729 2154. Vintage hairstyling starts from £45, but you can also get party packages, as well as hair dying services – and there’s a nail bar, too! TPL is full of lovely, attentive staff, and everyone I saw while I was there left looking absolutey fabulous!

Launch of The Powderpuff Girls On Tour

You probably know I’m a massive fan of The Powderpuff Girls – I’ve hair my hair done by them on many occasions in the past, whether it was at the salon on Columbia Road, or at a pop-up shop during an event!

Well, whilst The Powder Room on Columbia Road has closed its doors, The Powderpuff Girls will be bringing the beauty on tour to a venue near you. The pop-ups will be packed full of exciting new packages for all your girly celebrations, plus all your old favourites too! The Powder Room will also be making appearances at Paper Dress every Saturday – and The Powderpuff Girls were kind enough to invite me to their launch on 26 January for a complimentary pamper. How could I say no?!

Paper Dress

Paper Dress is an amazing vintage clothes and accessories shop that also has a bar to serve cocktails, cakes and coffee (the ultimate three Cs), so this is an amazing venue to visit, even if you’re not getting your hair or make-up done!

Paper Dress board 1

The Powderpuff Girls have a pretty little section at the back of the shop, stocked with all the goodies you’ll ever need for your transformation into a retro beauty queen.

Flicking through their gorgeous look book for Speedy Hair, I plumped for victory rolls (again!) but this time decided to go for a rolled fringe!

Hair

Even though it’s my own hair, I have to admit, it looks amazing – and I can say that with complete modesty, as I had nothing to do with it other than to grow it out of my head! One day I’ll be able to style my hair like this, but until then I’ll leave it in the hands of the professionals…

Back of hair detail

Speedy Hair costs £25, In A Jiffy Make-up costs £20, and you can get a package deal for both for £40 (very reasonable – and they do such an amazing job; I’ve had them do my hair and make-up for my hen party and a very important work event too). The fact that the back of my head is shaped like a heart leads me nicely on to mentioning that appointments are available for pampering sessions for a weekend Valentine’s date on Saturday 16th February. You can also celebrate London Fashion Week with The Powderpuff Girls at The Hoxton, too!

After getting my hair done, I popped on over to see the new painting of Kate Middleton at The National Portrait Gallery (my opinion: I’m obviously not an art connoisseur), which gave me the perfect chance to take some snaps of my hair in Trafalgar Square!

(In case you didn’t see my post earlier in the week, I’m wearing the Gretel Coat from Collectif. Sunglasses from eBay, and my earrings are from my nan!)

When I got home, I realised that my hairstyle was actually pretty similar to Rachael’s from Blade Runner, so I decided to break out the navy jacket and shoulder pads and do my best ‘I’ve just discovered I’m a replicant’ expression (sorry, spoiler!).

Rachael Blade Runner

It’s actually really hard to have an existential crisis in front of the camera and not look like a bit of an emo, so I decided to bring out my cat, Saffy, to lighten the mood. A juxtapositioning of the sadness of a robotic lifeform yearning after the simple pleasure that an animal enjoys merely by being alive? Or just a self-portrait of woman and cat?

Gemma and Saffy

Or is she a… (wait for it…) REPLICAT?

Little Red Riding Hood in Trafalgar Square: The Collectif Gretel Coat Unleashed!

Way back on Christmas Day last year, I was a tiny bit bored with all the rubbish TV, so I decided to download issue 25 of Vintage Life. Scrolling through, I found the Christmas Wishlist feature and immediately fell in love with the Collectif Gretel Coat.

image
Page from Vintage Life magazine.

Well, who wouldn’t? It’s an amazingly extravagant coat, straight out of Little Red Riding Hood – and a beautiful colour to boot. Unfortunately, at £160 it was definitely out of my price range – but then, a Christmas miracle happened. I checked out Collectif’s Facebook page and discovered that the company was running a 40% off discount… And they had one Gretel coat left, in my size. It was certainly fate, and who am I to fly in the face of the cosmos’ mysterious ways?

I ordered immediately, and when the coat arrived I fell in love all over again – but to be honest, I’ve chickened out of wearing it until last weekend. This is not a coat for the faint hearted. I was originally going to wear it last weekend, but with all the snow and ice I figured it would be just my luck to skid on the ice and fall over – embarrassing enough, but even worse when you’re dolled up to the nines. So when I was invited to the launch of The Powder Room on tour (more on that later!) I knew this was the perfect opportunity to wear my coat!

Gretel coat 2

Coat: Gretel by Collectif. Hair: The Powder Room @ Paper Dress*

As you can see, you certainly wouldn’t be lost in the crowd wearing this beauty! Sometimes, I wish I’d gone for the more subtle black version (but there weren’t any in stock, so it’s a moot point!), which would be more wearable, but then again, if you want to make an impact, this is certainly the go-to coat! Check out those beautiful pleats on the skirt, and the pretty pom-poms! The fabric has a gorgeous texture to it, and although the coat is very heavy, that makes it all the more snug for cold weather.

I thought I’d give you some behind the scenes info on taking this photo too. I employed a technique called ‘faith in humanity’, which involves setting your very expensive DSLR camera on timer mode in the middle of central London on a Saturday, and then running off so you can get as much of your body in shot without risking a heart attack. I also used another technique called ‘looking casually at buttons pretending to be doing important stuff’ which is useful when someone starts hanging around near you and looking suspiciously like they’ve mastered the art of ‘nicking someone’s camera when they’re taking photos of themselves in public by leaving their camera on the side’. Just a little insight there, in case you guys were students of photography like myself. (Please note, I have no idea what to do with my camera yet other than timer mode and no flash mode… But I am learning many techniques, which I am happy to humbly share with you!)

* My hair styling session at The Powder Room was complimentary for the purposes of revew on my blog – I’ll be posting a proper write-up later this week!

20s Murder Mystery at New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone – I hope 2013 is treating you well so far! I posted a preview of my New Year costume for my parents’ murder mystery evening the other day – and here’s the full run down of my outfit and accessories.

'20s outfitFirst of all, I have to show off my new Miss L Fire shoes, which were a Christmas present from my husband –  I love them! And, the Art Deco detailing was perfect for the party…
Miss L Fire Streamlined 1 Miss L Fire Streamlined 2 Miss L Fire Streamlined 3

I love those details on the back… The shoes are also available in green or black at Miss L Fire’s shop.

I had a beautiful sequined dress, which consisted of black netting over the top of blue fabric, which created a really nice, two-toned effect. It showed up bright blue with a flash, but in natural light was much darker.

Dress detailing

The dress is from Principles, but I got it on eBay – I’ve been stalking flapper style dresses for years so it was great to finally get one after all this time!

Accessories

Both of my accessories in this photo were from Primark – I love picking up accessories from here, as they’re so cheap and usually great quality, all considering. Both of these items have served me well over the years! I also wore three strings of fake pearls I bought last year from Tesco… Dead upmarket, me!

Head side 2

For my hair, I used a brilliant tutorial from YouTube, which you can find here. I couldn’t get my hair to curl properly, but it turned out it didn’t really matter in the end as I was able to pin it up in curls even though it was fairly straight! It came out pretty well, I thought.

Head side 1

If you have long hair and you wanted a really easy and straight forward flapper hair style, check out this video about how to fake a bob. I tried it last year and it worked really well – everyone thought I had a hair cut!

Group 1

We all had a brilliant time – everyone did really well with their costumes, and my nan even managed to guess the murderer was the maid! I definitely recommend murder mystery nights – they’re great fun, and really cheap, plus they give you a chance to dress up… Like I need one, right?

Bustin’ out the secret Santa gift: Skyfall and The Man With The Golden Gun

Being an enthusiastic fan of OPI’s Bond collection, I had naturally been hankering after the amazing Man With The Golden Gun topcoat; a clear base with real 18k gold flecks. At £24.99 it was beyond my price range for a single bottle of nail varnish, so I was over the moon when I got it for my secret Santa gift this Christmas – thank you, Omar! *

Having seen some amazing combos for Skyfall and The Man With The Golden Gun, I decided to break it out yesterday for a trip to the Balmer Lawn hotel for a carvery lunch with my husband! We had our wedding reception here so it’s nice to come back – and I wore my new Amelia Check Doll Dress from Collectif too – you can see the gorgeous fabric in these photos:

I love this top coat! It’s so opulent and beautiful – although I do feel a bit rotten when I have to take it off… It’s like throwing money away!

(Delicious post-carvery Christmas pudding…)

I also had a trial run with my ’20s outfit for New Year – we’re doing a murder mystery and I’m going to be an AMERICAN FLAPPER. Very imaginative, I know… I’m wearing a navy Principles beaded dress with purple and gold Streamlined shoes from Miss L Fire (Christmas pressie from my hubbie), and I shall be wrapped in a dishevelled stole as per my character instructions. Here’s a bit of a preview:

What are you guys doing to celebrate tonight? Let me know what you’re planning to wear – and have a Happy New Year!

* Yep, we always have a post-present reveal to work out who gave who what!

Vintage Clothing at Green’s Home Interiors

Just up the road from my in-laws’ place is a great little antiques warehouse called Green’s Home Interiors, which is full of furniture, books, homewares, and a great vintage clothing section with jewellery, dresses, jackets and accessories. I decided to pop in and have a post-Christmas mooch around!

IMG_0516

There were some truly amazing vintage jewellery sets there – check out these beauties!

I loved those giant golden bubble earrings from the ’80s at the front!

And check out this awesome red anchor necklace from the ’40s in this photo – it’s enormous!

IMG_0495

They also have racks of real fur shrugs, jackets and stoles on display as well. My sister in law picked up a faux fur piece here once, but all of the older items seem to be real.

IMG_0496

They also have a giant rack full of sequinned tops and jackets – very Dynasty! Or, Rita from Corrie…

Most of them were from the ’80s, but I found this amazing full length white dress from the ’50s – what a show-stopper!

I also found a really great ’70s cape and evening dress set – I actually loved this, which is weird, because I don’t usually go much for ’70s clothes, but this is just so unashamedly of its time that I couldn’t help admire it!

I loved this fur-collared jacket – stupidly forgot to check the price and details, but I thought I’d share the photo anyway.

Viva Forever – the musical!

So, as you know, because I keep banging on about it, we went to London on Saturday for a special pre-Christmas day out. I got my hair done, we went to Judy’s Vintage Fair, and bumbled around Camden for a bit – but the main reason for our trip was to see a preview of Viva Forever, the musical based on The Spice Girls’ songs. My husband is a huge Spice Girls fan and still follows their musical careers today, compelled to purchase their recordings… Well, with me it’s shoes and nail varnish, so I can’t really judge!
Viva Forever theatre 3
The musical is being staged at The Piccadilly Theatre, which is pretty small – we were surprised how intimate the musical actually was when we got in there. Our local theatre, The Mayflower in Southampton, is actually much bigger – no wonder it’s sold out. When we saw it, the musical was still very new and hadn’t opened or been reviewed yet, so there were definitely hiccups. The ending was pretty non-existent and abrupt. The second half flagged. There didn’t seem to be any proper focus on certain story arcs over other ones. The girl band idea was ditched after the interval. There was a lot that could be improved. That said, I still loved it. Up until the second act, I was fairly convinced that this was one of the best musicals I’d ever seen – second only to the very excellent We Will Rock You. The production was great – way better than the slightly farcical Jesus Christ Superstar stadium tour we’d been to see in September. The songs were chosen well and fit the plot, for the most part – although there were some album tracks I didn’t know at the beginning. That said, I’m not a fan of the band, so that’s hardly surprising.

The whole performance started off with a bang for me when we were invited to sit in ‘The Ambassador Lounge’, which was formly known as the Tunnel of Love. Ooo err! One of the employees approached us in the lobby and asked us if we’d like to sit in ‘a special area’, and I’m sure we both looked as sceptical as hell at the prospect. “How much is it?” we asked. She told us it was free, and so we agreed at once! “Poste haste to this ‘special area’ please!”

In theatre Ambassador Lounge sign In theatre Ambassador Lounge 3

As you can see, it was quite literally a tunnel, lined with beautiful chairs and tables – very intimate and peaceful compared to the rest of the theatre before curtains up! It also had a great vintage vibe, and matched very nicely with my hair – excellent.

In theatre 3

There was a drinks menu, but of course, being awkward, I wanted one of the special Spice Girls cocktails, so we had to trail all the way up to the bar at the top of the theatre to get one, accompanied by a theatre employee who ordered for us like we were VIPs!

Viva Forever cocktail menu 3

It was hard to pick because they all seemed really nice, but I went with a Sporty Spritz in the end – it tasted like cream soda. Delicious!

Hubby was very excited to see the show (although he later confessed he was nervous in case it was a bit crap…)

In Theatre Michael 4

I was fine as long as I had a cocktail…

In theatre 1

All in all, we had a great time seeing the show – I hope they get the ending fixed, but the first half was sublime. (The second half was rescued at the end by the Spice Girls medly finale, so at least it finished on a high note.) It was written by Jennifer Saunders (her first musical), and was very much in the vein of Mamma Mia – like the British version, if you will! There were some amazing comedy moments from the main character’s mum and her best friend, and an especially hilarious highlight in the second half when two characters sang 2 Become 1 in the bedroom – brilliant! I also really liked the way they performed Viva Forever – Spanish guy, singing parts in Spanish, playing the acoustic guitar – but my husband thought it was cheesy. Personally, I thought it would have been cheesier in English – we like foreign guys because we have no idea what they’re saying, right ladies? It’s probably all about football, computer games or cars, but if it’s FOREIGN it could be literally anything…

In theatre 5

If you go, see if you can get yourself down in the Ambassador Lounge, and also, get yourself one of those delicious cocktails. If you go in ready to be entertained, you’ll have a brilliant time, and if you love Jennifer Saunders’ comedy, you will be in heaven. I would definitely go back to see it again after it’s opened properly – you can’t really judge things too harshly before they’ve been properly polished after all! (You should see me first thing in the morning!)

Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair

General outfit 2

On Saturday (1 December), my husband and I popped into Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, so I could get my hair did for our big night out (more on that later)! I managed to restrain myself from spending big, although I’m now kicking myself because my parents have planned a roaring ’20s Agatha Christie murder mystery night for New Year’s Eve (okay, I sorta suggested it… and already had the kit… shush). If I had known then what I know now, and all that – although I have to admit, I’m more of a ’50s-era fan! (Despite the victory rolls!) There’s been some fierce, flapper-related eBaying since then, but we’ll get to that later – onto the fair!

Vintage Fair 5

The fair definitely lived up to its reputation as being affordable, and there were plenty of goodies on offer. I love vintage accessories, and although I don’t own any vintage clothing, that’s just a matter of time… I did try on a lovely long-sleeved white lace dress, but in the end I couldn’t get on over my hair – how about that for ironic?

In Judy's Vintage Fair 1

One of my favourite things about vintage fairs is how beautifully all the products are displayed. I spent most of my time taking pictures of everything rather than looking properly, in the end!

Vintage Fair Table Display Vintage Fair 13 Vintage Fair 10

I love vintage homewares, and I even spotted some Babycham glasses just like my nan used to break out at New Year’s!
Vintage Fair 7

That brought back some memories, I can tell you! I also coveted these gorgeous phones, and there was plenty of pretty crockery to be had.Vintage Fair 6 Vintage Fair 2

In Judy's Vintage Fair 3

I think for sure the highlights of the show for me were these pair of frankly amazing hats…

Vintage Fair 9 Vintage Fair 8

I especially had my eye on the bottom one – I don’t even know what this style of hat is called, but it’s lovely. I think the price was £50 – sadly too much to spend on something I know for a fact I’ll never really wear (as opposed to things I know I probably won’t wear but take a punt on anyway in case one day I wake up thinner, more daring, and more likely to be invited to lounge around a casino in Monte Carlo or something…)

These babies, however, were in my price range, and something I know I would wear…

Vintage Fair 12

So I bought the lovely silver one on the right – £6! Bargain!

Did anyone else visit the fair at the weekend? Or any other vintage fair recently? Let me know what you bought! And if you know what that style of hat is (and where I can get one, just for future reference, y’know), leave a comment – I’d be everso grateful!

Victory Rolls by The Powderpuff Girls!

On Saturday 1 December, I got my hair and make up done by the lovely Claire from The Powderpuff Girls! The company had a stall at Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, so I popped along to get all dolled up!

Getting ready 3

I had already decided I wanted victory rolls, because it’s a look I’ve never been able to do on myself, and I wanted to pick up some tips at the same time as seeing what it would look like! As you can see from this picture, my hair is ridiculously long, so I’m definitely planning on having it cut soon to make styling easier!

Getting ready 7

I guess the main tip I came away with was – don’t be afraid to backcomb to insane proportions! The hair you can see in the picture above hasn’t been sprayed at all, it’s just standing up all by itself!

(As a side note, don’t you LOVE the Powderpuff Girls’ uniform?!)

Getting ready 6

Another thing I’d been doing wrong with victory rolls is trying to curl my hair from the ends down – Claire started from the middle and wound backwards from there, and it definitely made it easier to do!

I also got my makeup done with the classic red lip and cat-eye flick.

Getting ready 5 Getting ready 1 Getting ready 10 Getting ready 11

The whole thing was a very reasonable £30, and I even got to take a free powderpuff home with me too! This is the third time I’ve had my hair and make up done by The Powderpuff Girls, and each time I’ve been really pleased with the look and the style’s holding power. They use Paul and Joe products along with some other brands you can see on the site, and it really makes a different to how long they last. I’m definitely thinking of investing in some Paul and Joe foundation – Claire wrote down all of the products she used on me, which was awesome!

Come back later in the week for more about the fair, my outfit, and the real reason we were in London… to see Viva Forever!
