Tralala from Penhaligon’s and Meadham Kirchhoff

20140506-195932.jpg

Now available directly from Penhaligon’s (previously exclusively from Harvey Nichols) comes Tralala, a fantastically heady blend created in collaboration with the fashion house Meadham Kirchhoff. I love Penhaligon’s – it’s such a traditionally British perfumery, originally founded in the 1860s and perfumer to Queen Victoria herself! The signature blends are complex and daring, and Meadham Kirchhoff has used several different blends to scent their shows before uniting to create Tralala with Master Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. When I found about about this new blend, I contacted Penhaligon’s, who were kind enough to send me this pretty little atomiser for review. The 100ml bottle is available from Harvey Nichols and Penhaligon’s for £150.

20140506-201233.jpg

I’m no trained oflactor myself, but the spicy, warm and complex scent of Tralala make it the perfect evening perfume. With heady, eccentric and headstrong notes, this perfume will certainly make an impression – it’s become my favourite scent since I first tried it! To get technical, the head notes include Aldehydes, Saffron, Whiskey, Ambrette Seed Butter, Galbanum, Violet Leaf Absolute, with heart notes of Carnation, Leather, Tuberose, Ylang Ylang, Orris, Incense. Base notes include Myrrh Resinoid, Opoponax Absolute, Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedarwood, Heliotrope, Musk and Vanilla. This is described as a unisex scent, and with its earthy overtones, I can definitely see why.

20140506-202310.jpgPlus, it comes in such a cute little box too! Head here to purchase from Penhaligon’s, and click here to purchase from Harvey Nichols.

Special Delivery! McQ Swallow Wrap Bracelet

20140430-154643.jpg
After I ordered my tickets for the McQueen exhibition at the V&A next year (see info here!) I decided to check out the collection online at the label’s website. Most of the items are completely out of my price range, but I did spy this beautiful dove grey leather wrap bracelet, priced at £45!

20140430-154821.jpg
It finally arrived yesterday and it’s a lovely, light accessory that just so happens to go with my grey Modalu Pippa bag and Mint Velvet plimsolls!

20140430-154928.jpg
The wrap bracelet comes in a black McQ dust bag with some tags and labels, in case you were wondering!

20140430-155037.jpg
They also use these cool little stickers to seal the packaging as well!

20140430-155112.jpg
The double wrap bracelet is really long on my wrist, so I ended up tucking the excess around the buckle, but you can play around with the placement of the straps a little bit…

20140430-155228.jpg

20140430-155242.jpg

20140430-155302.jpg
The leather isn’t the sturdiest type I’ve come across, but the swallow charm is removable if you wanted to add it to a different strap…

20140430-155401.jpg
You can find the bracelet online at a variety of retailers. Here’s the link to the item on McQueen’s site! (The next thing on my wishlist is a De Manta clutch! Aren’t they fabulous?)

Bag ‘n’ Shoes: Modalu Pippa Grab bag and Mint Velvet taupe suede plimsolls

20140422-203438.jpg

(EDIT: See the end of my post for international availability on the Mint Velvet shoes!)

Pippa, meet Kate. Kate, meet Pippa. Ah, you’re already acquainted? What a coincidence!

20140422-231907.jpg
I have to say, before this year, I didn’t take much notice of Pippa Middleton’s style. I really like her columns in Waitrose Magazine, and I enjoyed her book, but her fashion never really made its way onto my radar until I picked up a pretty grey necklace from Accessorize I saw her wearing in a Telegraph piece. From there, it wasn’t too long before I fell in love with the Pippa grab bag in shark from Modalu!

20140422-232211.jpg
I’d been looking for a replacement for my beloved grey tote bag for a while, since the shoulder strap broke. I never thought a grey tote would be so versatile until I picked it up as a (very poor) replikate of Kate’s grey Tod’s bag. So with mine broken, I was open to alternatives, and as soon as I saw the Pippa bag, I fell in love!

20140422-232410.jpg
It’s a very handsome and practical bag, and it seems impossible to ever completely fill it up! Plus, all those handy compartments and zips makes organising things a breeze. (We’ve all been there, elbow deep in a bag that’s mysteriously swallowed door keys, right?).

20140422-232613.jpg
Plus, I love the shell motif on the zipper tags too! The Pippa is currently only available in shark (grey) with silver hardware, so I had to go on eBay to find one with gold.

20140422-232728.jpg
Anyway, onto my other style influence, Kate, most famous as Pippa’s sister – you might have seen her at Pippa’s debut when she was wearing that fabulous bridesmaid dress. Many people don’t realise this, but Kate was actually the bride. I KNOW! Small world, right?! Anyway, Kate’s been pictured wearing her taupe Mint Velvet plimsolls recently on tour Down Under, and as Mint Velvet have announced they are releasing the shoe again at the beginning of May, I thought I’d do a post about them!

20140422-233110.jpg
As I’ve mentioned before, my shoe size varies from a 6 (39) to a 7 (40), but I most usually take a 7, so this is the size I ordered. They fit a little snugly, and are narrow in the toe, which is worth mentioning if you’re going to order a pair yourself.

20140422-233307.jpg
They also have a neat Mint Velvet logo at the base of the heel, which I think is how they were ID’d when Kate first wore them!

20140422-233410.jpg
I wouldn’t call them my comfiest shoe, especially without socks, but I haven’t really broken them in yet. But they are a very smart pair of shoes if you’re looking for something casual that’s still stylish and somewhat dressy. I also think the grey laces are the final touch that really makes the design feel that much more polished!

20140422-233611.jpg
And of course, they’re the perfect match for my Pippa bag! Thanks, Middleton sisters!

EDIT: Mint Velvet has been inundated with requests for this item since it first appeared last year (originally priced £79). The company has stated on Facebook that they will be releasing the shoes again in stores and online in the first week of May. Excitingly for international customers, who previously couldn’t order from Mint Velvet, the company has also suggested that they will open facilities for international orders soon. However, you will also be able to order directly from House of Fraser, which offers international shipping to the US, amongst other places. (Read the comments thread on Facebook here for my source on this! You can keep updated about the availability of the Mint Velvet taupe plimsolls here on their website. I don’t have a direct link for the item on House of Fraser yet, but the shoes are likely to appear in this section of the site. You can find House of Fraser’s homepage at http://www.houseoffraser.com/)

Find the Mint Velvet taupe plimsolls, now called Bibi, at Mint Velvet here for £89. For international orders, contact Mint Velvet directly at customercare@mintvelvet.co.uk, or you can wait until they are stocked at House of Fraser: http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/.

The Modalu Pippa grab bag is available in a range of colours on their site here. And, here’s a direct link to the bag in shark, my favourite colour! (Pst – I asked Modalu if they were going to bring back the shark with gold hardware and they told me they were not planning to continue production of the shark colour. So, if it’s a shade you like, bear that in mind!)

It’s a Bakewell Tart off!

You might remember me mentioning I visited the pretty little town of Bakewell back in March for some Bakewell tarts – and I liked it so much I went back for more again this month, on my way from Coventry to Manchester!

20140424-005916.jpg

Bakewell is, of course, the home of the Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, and so competition is fierce when it comes to who is the best, most authentic and original purveyor of Bakewell tarts and puddings

20140424-010036.jpg

Now, here is a bit of Bakewell insider knowledge for you. Most people think of the Bakewell tart when they think of Bakewells, which is commercially available from almost any bakers and supermarket in the UK and consists of short crust pastry, spread with jam, topped with a sponge and ground almond mixture, and layered with white icing. A cherry Bakewell is it’s more ubiquitous form, which just means there’s a glacé cherry on the top!

20140424-010329.jpg
However, some argue that the true authentic Bakewell is the Bakewell pudding, a similar but still distinctively delicious dessert which is made of flaky pastry, filled with jam, and then topped with a custard made of egg and almonds.

20140424-010557.jpg
In order to bring you, the reader, some added value, I decided to report from the front lines and let you know which Bakewell tart or pudding was the best in all of Bakewell…

20140424-010708.jpg
The Bakewell Tart and Coffee House was a great place to stop for a drink and a tart – their artery busting iced monstrosities were perfect to round off a Mother’s Day meal!

20140424-010853.jpg
However, I really wanted to try some puddings, because although an authentic tart is awesome, Bakewell puddings are nearly impossible to find elsewhere, especially on the south coast where I’m from!

20140424-011007.jpg
So, we stopped off at probably the quaintest looking (and most prominent) bakery… The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop!

20140424-011102.jpg

The shop was touristy, which I loved, especially the little signs telling you about the history of the puddings. I love local food history like this!

20140424-011207.jpg
The prices for Bakewell puddings were pretty similar from shop to shop… There’s no price gouging going on in Bakewell, or so it seems!

20140424-011336.jpg
The second shop we went to was Bloomers, which was slightly more… aggressive in asserting its credentials as the original and authentic Bakewell experience (theirs is the sign above telling you not to ask for iced tarts!).

20140424-011548.jpg
So, with both our puddings purchased, we went off to our hotel to begin the taste test!

20140424-011646.jpg
First of all, Bloomers’, which I have to say, is not a handsome looking pudding:

20140424-011724.jpg
And inside (below), I fear that it doesn’t improve. The custard is dense, eggy and not very sweet at all. The sweetness is supposed to come from the jam, I think, but because of the runny consistency of the jam, a lot of it leaks out and it was difficult to get a good amount in each bite. The pastry was tough, too, although, overall it had a very strong taste of almonds. Sadly, I couldn’t give this more than 5/10 – and at this point, I was starting to think that Bakewell puddings were a horrible, horrible mistake only improved by the addition of icing.

20140424-011759.jpg
Luckily, we had bought the Old Original, below, an unassuming yet handsome chap with an even filling and dark brown top.

20140424-011833.jpg
(By the way, these puddings are not for the faint of heart or anyone watching their diet… Look at the lard on this bad boy!)

20140424-011932.jpg
Inside, The Old Original completely won me over. This is what a Bakewell pudding should taste like. Crisp, flaky pastry, a gooey, sweet custard with a hint of almond, and a decently thick jam. The consistency of the fillings meant every bite blended, and the contrast between the rich, silky, sweet custard and the crisp pastry was delicious. This was easily a 9/10. In fact, I’d go as far as to say I’d make another trip to Bakewell in the future, just to hunt out this gorgeous pudding once more!

20140424-011957.jpg

However, there’s no need for all that fuss. If you want to try the Old Original version yourself – good news! You can actually order them online here. You can even send a lucky soul (yourself, perhaps?) a Bakewell pudding every month for a year! Now, that sounds like absolute heaven. (Hint, hint?)

And, finally, where the Bakewell pudding was actually invented… The Rutland Arms!

20140424-012334.jpg

Find out more about the lovely town of Bakewell here. It’s located in the Peak District National Park, and is a great place to visit. However, make sure you arrive early in the tourist season if you want to get a parking space in the town centre! (I mean it… Really.)

Styling Summer Wedges

This summer season (for me, anyway) is going to be all about replikating Kate Middleton’s staple wedges. I know plenty of people scoff at her Corkswoons, Minx and Imperias, but I’m not one of them! I certainly haven’t grown tired of seeing these shoes, and I can’t wait to wear them out and about!

When Dune, the company that now owns Pied A Terre, re-released the Imperia D wedges in natural under the new Dune Black label, I was thrilled – I already had a pair in black, but the natural had been unavailable for a long time. As soon as I saw they were on sale again, I snapped them up! Despite them being under a different brand name, I can confirm they are the same shoe – although why Pied A Terre also has a range of Imperias as well, albeit without the natural colour, I couldn’t tell you.

Once they arrived, I started to wonder – how to accessorize them? So, I put together this Polyvore set with some basic ideas to get my creative juices flowing! (And I resisted the temptation to add my beloved Mulberry Lily in tweed – all of these bags are still available, if you fancy a purchase!)

Styling wedges

I noticed this awesome Modalu St Ives grab bag (£69) in John Lewis the other day and fell in love with the quirky front pocket lock – although the version I saw was in taupe. The orange is a lovely bright way to bring a little summer into your life – and the natural colour of the fabric matches the Dune wedges almost perfectly! The Next striped shopper was on my radar after the Nautical and Nice post I did recently – and it’s a great little bag for just £20, especially with the stylish little rope handles. Find it here. Finally, in one of this season’s hottest colours, this Dorset tote from Mulberry is crazy expensive at £595, but as I’m a Mulberry girl, I had to include something! The tote comes in a variety of colours – this one is called Bluebell, and is available here. (Modalu do a similar bag called the Artemis Shopper in azure blue for £199 here.) Finally, I had to throw in a pair of sunglasses – and I do love the classic Wayfarer style from Rayban! These are really unusual – they’re actually coated with black leather, hence the £250 price tag. Of course, you can get authentic Raybans for cheaper than this, and ‘replicas’ for even less on eBay! What do you think – how would you style a natural wedge espadrille? Do you think wedges are outdated (again), or are they a timeless classic? And, did you manage to bag a pair before they sold out?!

Bag ‘n’ Shoes: Mulberry Exotic Tweed Lily and French Sole King Bulldog Opera Slippers

20140421-164704.jpg

Ever get so obsessed with a pair of shoes that you memorise the item code? Meet French Sole’s AN52 – the King Bulldog Opera Slipper:

20140421-164920.jpg

These were specially made for London Fashion Week, and as soon as I saw them I fell in love. I love dogs and I love black suede slipper shoes – I practically lived in a pair of studded ones from Topshop two summers ago! However, at £190 I wasn’t in a rush to purchase them, thinking I could wait for a discount code or something similar… Until I realised they were sold out in my size online. So I contacted FS to ask about restocking and was told… NO RESTOCKING!

20140421-165201.jpg
I was confused – hurt, despondent, depressed… Obsessed. I stalked the page hoping for a return in my size, until eventually I gave up. For about a day. After that, I called customer services to check – one more time – and although they had none in the warehouse, the wonderful person on the other end of the line offered to ring around for me and eventually tracked them down on King’s Road!

20140421-165422.jpg
From there, they offered to post them out, and the rest, as they say, is history. Personally, I think these are a great alternative to the much-loved Charlotte Olympia kitty flats – which are adorable, but I’ve always been more of a dog person!

As these are my current favourite shoes, I had to pair them with my current favourite bag – the exotic flame tweed large Lily from Mulberry.

20140421-165543.jpg
Can’t get enough of this bag, it’s truly my favourite and gets a lot of use!I thought the orange and black would be limiting at first, but it actually fits in pretty well with the rest of my wardrobe.

You can find the Bulldog slippers online in limited sizes at French Sole’s site here. The tweed Lily may still be in stock in some of Mulberry’s outlet stores – you can find a list here.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter everyone! Hope you’re all having a fantastic day today!

20140420-105705.jpg(Yellow d’Orsay style flats from Next)

Don’t forget, Easter’s not just about chocolate either – I say it’s also about…

20140420-110036.jpg(Shoes from Mint Velvet – and they’ll be available again in the first week of May!)

Eggs in general! Namely these homemade Scotch eggs I made using chorizo sausage – perfect for an Easter buffet.

How do you celebrate Easter? A family dinner, Easter egg hunt, church service, walk in the woods? Let me know!

Easter 2014 at Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum and Mason is one of my favourite stores in London – and when it comes to holidays and celebrations, they always push the boat out with a great range of beautiful presented food and amazing displays!

20140418-174444.jpg

Obviously, the main attraction for Easter celebrations in the UK is chocolate, moulded into the shape of eggs or Easter animals. I really liked the chocolate duck eggs, encased in a cardboard egg container!

20140419-125557.jpg

There were a variety of edible animals, including this sweet little pig – although I don’t remember pigs being an Easter animal!

20140419-125703.jpg
There were also various chocolate offerings, varying from the restrained to the extravagant.

20140419-125801.jpg

20140419-125813.jpg

20140419-125825.jpg
You could also get an Easter egg hand decorated in the store, which was a nice touch!

20140419-125911.jpg
You could also pick up a pretty batch of macarons if you preferred something less traditional, but still colourful!

20140419-130044.jpg
There were loads of simnel cakes – can’t say I’ve ever had one at Easter but I’d love to try it!

20140419-130145.jpg
One of the best addition to the range in my opinion, were the Easter biscuits. Again, they ranged from the subtle:

20140419-130303.jpg
To the adorably over the top!

20140419-130337.jpg

20140419-130353.jpg

20140419-130406.jpg
You could even buy a little meringue chick!

20140419-130520.jpg
And there were some spectacular yellow flower arrangements in the basement too!

20140419-130613.jpg

20140419-130628.jpg
If it’s Easter, it has to be lamb – and the butcher had some very tempting morsels on display!

20140419-130737.jpg
All in all, Fortnums is definitely worth a visit at any time of year, but particularly during holidays and festivals! (If you’re not into food, there’s also an amazing millinery selection, accessories and toiletries on another level, including a beautiful perfume department!)

20140419-130835.jpg
(Obligatory Fortnums selfie!)

20140419-130908.jpg
You can find Fortnum & Mason online at www.fortnumandmason.com, or visit in person at 181 Piccadilly, London, W1A 1ER. It’s a short walk from the nearest Tube station – Piccadilly Circus.

Russell & Bromley / Stuart Weitzman Corkswoon Wedges vs Sainsbury’s Tu Suede Wedges

Kate Middleton’s most iconic pair of smart casual shoes are probably her blue suede wedges. Most frequently seen during the 2013 Summer Olympics in London, these wedges are by American designer Stuart Weitzman and available at Russell & Bromley in the UK. However, there are also plenty of high street replicas – such as the pairs from Next and Hobbs last year. This year, grocery chain Sainsbury’s is in on the trend, producing a pair of blue suede cork wedges for £18 for their clothing line Tu. I happened to drop into Sainsbury’s yesterday wearing the originals, so I present a quick side by side comparison in the interests of retail science!

(Just an FYI, Sainsbury’s is the lighter blue of the two!)

20140412-183439.jpg

20140412-183455.jpg

20140412-183505.jpg

I thought it was funny to note that 1) these were the only pair left after the Duchess’s appearance with the similar pair the other day, and 2) that they were positioned right next to some Sledge lookalikes!

My verdict: the Tu wedges are a decent replicate at £18, although the colour is not really a match for the dark navy of the originals and therefore doesn’t blend that well with dark jeans – which is the way Kate usually wears hers. For the price you probably won’t be surprised to hear that the suede doesn’t feel as nice, and the shoe itself isn’t as comfortable – although the heel and platform are both lower!

Sainbury’s don’t do mail order but you can find the details, including the item number, here. The original versions are here from Russell & Bromley, although they always sell out after an appearance!

Restaurant Review: Annie’s, Manchester

This week I took a trip up to Manchester to visit the Corrie set, and soak in the Corrie-related sights of the city. No Corrie-fan’s visit to Manchester would be complete without a stop at Annie’s, the restaurant owned by Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz in the show.

20140410-182841.jpg
Annie’s is located in the centre of the city, within walking distance of all of Manchester’s great shopping areas, and it’s also a great place to go for a pre-theatre meal.

20140410-183025.jpg
We popped in on a Monday evening – it was really quiet but apparently we just missed the pre-theatre rush.

20140410-183114.jpg
I ordered a glass of Annie’s Fizz, which is Prosecco and cherry brandy, with a cherry at the bottom. It was so good I had another one!

20140410-183244.jpg

Anyway, onto the proper menu! Annie’s serves a simple selection of good, Northern fare, all presented with modern flair to give it a bit of restaurant pizazz.

20140410-183509.jpg
I ordered the Lancashire rarebit which came with a delicious chutney and was served on whole meal bread. A great start to the meal, and the chutney was the perfect balance to the heavy, rich cheese.

20140410-183637.jpg
Meanwhile, my husband had the corned beef hash cake, topped with a perfectly cooked poached egg and accompanied with another relish. Again, a great balance of flavours.

20140410-183813.jpg
For my main course, how could I have chosen anything other than a hotpot? Famous across the country, the Lancashire hotpot is a lamb stew topped with sliced potatoes. It’s also famous in Coronation Street thanks to Betty, a sadly departed character whose legendary hotpots are still served in the Rovers today. You can’t visit Lancashire without eating a hotpot.

20140410-184035.jpg
Served with a gorgeous side dish of red cabbage, the hotpot was a decent size and chock full of lamb. My only nitpick was that it was a little dry – I like mine swimming in sauce, but this had just enough to keep everything moist.

20140410-184215.jpg
My husband had the cottage pie – which he thoroughly enjoyed, along with the carrots which came on the side.

20140410-184305.jpg
We also had chips because we were on holiday. So it was basically a legal requirement. These were crispy, thick and delicious. Definitely try these if you get the chance!

Halfway through our meal, we were greeted by the lovely and (literally) fragrant Ms. McAlpine herself, who pops in from time to time to greet guests and see how everything is going.

20140410-184521.jpg
It was a lovely surprise as she plays one of my favourite characters! And she and her father Tom were both incredibly friendly and chatty.

20140410-184613.jpg
Onto the pudding – this was another no brainier. It had to be the Fizz Bomb! (This is the nickname given to Jennie’s character on the show!)

20140410-184652.jpg
We shared this between us as by this point we were both really full. It was very tasty indeed – chocolate ice cream coated with a shell of milk chocolate, drizzled with sauce and studded with popping candy.

20140410-184811.jpg
All in all, it was an enjoyable meal, great service and a lovely evening! The staff were great and the food was tasty and traditional.

20140410-184924.jpg

You can find Annie’s online at anniesmanchester.co.uk. The restaurant is located at 5 Old Bank Street, Mancheter, M2 7PE, and you can call them on 0161 839 4423 or book via email at bookings@anniesmanchester.co.uk.
