The View From The Shard: Favourites This Week

At Christmas, my lovely sister in law gave my husband and me a voucher to use for The Shard, one of London’s most distinctive skyscrapers, and the tallest building in the EU. Situated along the South Bank, it was a great opportunity to go out and enjoy the sights – including gawping at the exterior of The Globe, an amazing sight for an English graduate!

Once inside The Shard, you’ll have a couple of stories of great views, plus some bars and a little digital sightseeing guide, which gives you some of the history of the views of London you can see. It was amazing to get the context of some of the buildings and areas you can see, and if you love London I’d definitely recommend visiting!

I paired my super comfy rose gold Ferragamo flats with my Lulu Guinness bag, and brought my lovely blue Ray-Ban aviators – the perfect sunglasses to shield your eyes and give you great views!

Of course, one of the best accessories was a G&T – Fever-Tree had a pop-up bar and I absolutely had to celebrate the sunny skies with a tasty tonic and London gin!

Everywhere you looked there was an incredible mixture of modern buildings and history – here’s a view taking in some of the newest and distinctive buildings in London, along with The Monument to the Great Fire of London, which you can just about make out poking from behind the white flower above. I actually climbed all the way to the top this year, and it had great views – although not as spectacular as The Shard!

If you’re heading to London, make this one of your first visits, so you can get a bird’s eye view of the city, and start to understand some of its rich and amazing history!

Before we trekked up the tower, we stopped at Brixton to try Baba G’s lamb burger – named as one of Timeout’s best burgers in London. It was definitely delicious – topped with an onion bhaji and filled with spice and flavour, and accompanied with spicy fries loaded with mango and mint sauce. Delicious!

As the weather starts to get slightly cooler, I’m digging out my cardigans and knits ready for autumn. I love adding big chunky brooches to them, and my Chanel brooch from my birthday last year is my favourite!

I also couldn’t resist adding a little more to my jewellery collection in the form of a new pair of Links of London earrings…

And, I even got some post through from Chanel, including this adorable little card!

I was also sent this amazing new lipshade C/O Charlotte Tilbury. The new Hot Lips range is incredible; a series of fantastic colours inspired by incredible women and pop culture icons. I plumped for Secret Salma, which is a rich pinky red.

Just like many of CT’s colours, I was initially worried it was a bit too strong for me, but when I applied it, the colour looked amazing (if I do say so myself!). Check out the whole range here (http://www.charlottetilbury.com/uk/new-hot-lips-lipstick) and let me know which one you would pick!

(Also featuring my Links of London earrings – the Hope Eggs! I snagged these with a discount, so it wasn’t quite as painful as it could have been…)

For our last end of summer holidays hurrah, the husband and I headed off the The Chilworth Arms for a Sunday roast of epic proportions. I’d never been there before but it was fabulous, and I’d definitely go there again, especially if it was for a special occasion.

I had a gorgeous chicken liver parfait – more crostini next time, though, please!

That was followed by a hefty helping of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, with lashings of gravy and my own pot of horseradish sauce

Finally, as I was in full-on glutton mode, I went for the cheeseboard for afters. I’ve always wanted to have a cheeseboard instead of dessert, but every time I’m too full. This time I was still too full but I had most of it to go! The best touch here were the gorgeous mini-figs drenched in syrup. They went wonderfully with the cheese – a fantastic selection. Try it if you’re ever visiting! They have some great Christmas and New Year menus. https://www.chilwortharms.co.uk/.

If you’re a big Game of Thrones fan and you’d like to indulge in some retail therapy before the premiere of the new season this week, have I got a post for you! Replikating at Hobbs, Gunwharf Quays

Gunwharf Quays is my local shopping outlet, and whilst it doesn’t have as many luxury brands as Bicester, it’s still an amazing place to shop.

20140406-002508.jpg
If you’re after some Kate Middleton style, it’s also a great place to pick up replikates!

20140406-002615.jpg
Many of Kate’s favourite shops and brands are here, including L.K. Bennett, Barbour, Hobbs, Jaeger, Ted Baker, Links and Ralph Lauren

20140406-003046.jpg

I popped in to Gunwharf for a quick pit stop this weekend, and here are some of my finds!

20140406-003214.jpg

This awesome Ted Baker jacket in silver was a special sample priced at £80. Unfortunately it was a bit creased and didn’t photograph well, but it had a beautiful shape to the back.

20140406-003355.jpg

Ted Baker is an excellent place to get really gorgeous party dresses or frocks for the races.

20140406-003459.jpg

Another great outlet is L.K. Bennett. I’ve purchased many a great item in here, including a teal Jude jacket (£60) and a pair of black suede Harper pumps (£115). Highlights today included a black Davina dress (Kate has worn one in teal under her Jetta jacket – like the Jude) for £150, and Sledges in beige, gold and black glitter for £115.

20140406-003737.jpg

I spent most of my time in Hobbs though – I love the brand and the physical stores, but let’s just say their online service leaves a lot to be desired… But let’s stick with the positive for this post!

20140406-003900.jpg

There were a few items in here from the current mid season sale, including plenty of items in the same Dalmatian print that Kate wore in Southampton (hers was a collarless coat). The Niamh top was there in blue and white for £28.

20140406-004204.jpg

There were also trousers, a scarf, and a cardigan (£50).

20140406-004347.jpg

As the Dalmatian mac that Kate wore is long since sold out, these are great replikating options which use the same print! There are even shoes – the Lexi open toe court for £49 and the Bea ballerina, £35.

20140406-004628.jpg

My favourite replikate from Hobbs is the Myra wedge, in navy suede (£49).

20140406-004739.jpg

They also had the mushroom version, which was incredibly tempting!

Hobbs Outlet stores can be found at Bicester, Braintree, Canterbury, Cardiff, Cheshire Oaks, Kildare, Portsmouth, Swindon, Walton-On-Thames and York. Track them down at http://www.hobbs.co.uk.

Gold for Christmas

It seems as though gold is definitely in this year, and in honour of the season (and in order to satisfy my window shopping habit) I’ve put together a collection of some of the hottest items in this season’s most festive colour! I was inspired by Burberry’s beautiful gold beauty collection – and when I saw Mulberry’s new Metallic Mushroom range, I knew there was no hope for resisting…

Halloween Snakeskin Nail Art Tutorial

Text640

I’m really getting into the Halloween spirit here, and this is my third and final Halloween nail tutorial. (You can see my post about a pretty starry night tutorial here, and a pumpkin confetti tutorial here.)

As I’m going to be dressing as Medusa this Halloween, I thought a snakeskin mani was the only appropriate choice for nail art! Luckily, it’s pretty easy to replicate this.

Snakeskin Montage 1Indigo Skull Scarf, Alexander McQueen

All you need is are two contrasting colours, some lace, and a makeup sponge. I’ve found that this effect works best if you use a dark colour underneath and a lighter colour on top. My tools are in the top left, and my first attempt is on the top right. Bottom left shows you how to place the lace over your varnished nail: basically, paint your nails as usual with your base and colour, then stretch over the lace and sponge the lighter top coat over the top, very sparingly. You then end up with the effect on the right! I used Ruby & Millie in Green, and topped with Revlon’s Gold Coin. Then, a slick of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat, if you’re happy with the look. But me, I’m NEVER happy…

Snakeskin Montage 2Snake Finger Tip Ring, ASOS / Grey Snakeskin Bag, Primark / Snake Bracelet, ASOS / Snake Necklace, eBay / Grey Skull Bracelet, Links of London

The top two images are the plain snakeskin mani, but if your base colour is very opaque, you can paint that over the top again, and get a really subtle snakeskin look, especially if you use a metallic glitter like I did…

But wait! There’s more!

Matte montageEmerald Ring, Primark

If you’re going the whole hog, you may as well add some OPI Matte Top Coat, too! I found it really makes the snakeskin effect pop through the opaque layer…

Designer Accessories: The Wishlist Edit

If you could make a list of your top five most wanted designer accessories, what would you include?

Designer Accessories
For me, it’s got to be Chanel studs (in gold, please!), an iconic skull scarf from Alexander McQueen, and to continue the theme, a skull bracelet from Links of London, plus a pretty black Alexa from Mulberry with soft gold furniture (I love black and gold together!) – and of course, what else but a pair of classic Louboutin pumps in black, with sky high heels!

Halloween Style

You don’t have to dress up as a vampire or a witch to let a little Halloween spirit into your life – I spend most of October celebrating my spooky side, and embracing every opportunity to display my love of the paranormal. This year I decided to do a round up of some of my favourite Halloween items to bring scary flair to your outfits!

Halloween Style

As you can see, I went a little skull crazy with the accessories, but thanks to Alexander McQueen, skulls are a pretty iconic fashion statement. Display them everywhere from shoes, to necklaces, to bracelets (I so need one of those adorable Links of London bracelets!). Cats also have a spooky reputation as witches familiars, so these cool tights from Monki Bibi are a great way to introduce them to your Halloween outfit – or just wear a beanie, like this one from River Island! Ciate do some great nail colours for Halloween (from left to right, I’ve featured Stiletto, Twilight and Hopscotch), so even if you’re not busting out any fancy nail art, you can still get in on the fun. And finally, if you don’t want to go the whole hog with these cool themed T-shirts and tanks I found on ASOS, then channel some gothic glam with black, sequins and glitter, like with this cool dipped hem top.

What do you think of Halloween fashion? Do you get into the festivities wholeheartedly, or do you prefer to keep it subtle with a few little touches here and there?

Highclere Castle: Home of Downton Abbey

Downton text

Last weekend, my folks and a couple of friends and I all piled into a car to head to Highclere Castle, home of Downton Abbey! I actually live just 40 minutes up the road from the location, but it’s so hard to get tickets – we actually booked ours in February. It’s been a loooong wait.

When we got there, it was drizzling, and surrounded by mist – which was very atmospheric, but not very good for photos. Unless you wanted photos of atmospheric drizzle…

Misty mosaic

The neat little folly was called Jackdaws Castle – basically designed to look nice from the castle rather than do anything – it didn’t even have a roof! I didn’t remember it from the show, but my friend recognised it from a scene with Lady Edith and a certain imposter who turned up as a patient at the Abbey during the war…

Misty mosaic 2

Unfortunately, photography is banned inside the castle, so I don’t have any pictures of Countess Grantham’s bedroom or the lovely foyer, but we did have a trip around the gardens I can share with you – by the time finished touring the house and the excellent Egyptian exhibit, it had definitely brightened up!

Gardens mosaic

I definitely recommend going if you’re a fan of the show – for one thing, it’s really neat to see how it all fits together in real life. And who could resist having their photo snapped at Downton Abbey? Not me, that’s for sure!

Tickets for Highclere Castle can be purchased in advance from the website here. The summer season is currently sold out, although tickets may be available on the day subject to capacity – best time to try your luck is 2pm. £18 gets you an adult ticket to see the grounds, the Egyptian exhibit, and the castle interior. Tickets for just the grounds are also available at a cheaper price.
