5 Swoon-Worthy Summer Pieces from a Few of Kate’s Favourite Designers

Elegant and timeless, the Duchess of Cambridge never seems to miss a step when it comes to dressing appropriately and fashionably for every occasion – that’s one of the reasons I’m so fascinated by her style. While I may not attend as many formal and special events as the dashing duchess, I can certainly pick up a few pretty pieces made by some of her favourite designers. From preppy to feminine to regal, she has mastered the art of picking proper attire without losing her own personal sense of style. I’ve gathered a handful of inspiring pieces that you’ll want to wear all summer long.

Temperley London

Blazer

If you wish to look smart like Kate while also keeping your cool in the summer heat, Lyst’s editorial team suggests a jacket in a lightweight material with thoughtful tailoring. The pink Lanai blazer by Temperley London is crafted from linen for breathability while still offering a polished and professional appearance. Wear an outfit like this with a pair of Kate-inspired wedges to the office, and then dress it up with jewellery and a clutch for cocktails after work. This looks so much like a riff on the peach Tara Jarmon coat that Kate wore when visiting Naomi House in Hampshire that I can really imagine her selecting this – a pretty pastel colour on a traditionally unisex item makes it ultra feminine and especially appropriate for summer!

Alexander McQueen

Dress

Named as one of her favourite designers by What Kate Wore, McQueen’s dresses are definitely staples in the royal wardrobe. Although pricey for the average household, you can still use the garments as inspiration for the pieces you can pick up within your price range (think Reiss or Whistles!). There’s something so ethereal about seeing the duchess in different shades of white, which is why I’ve chosen this lovely perforated A-line dress in cream and black. It’s perfect for baby showers, engagement parties, and brunch with the girls. McQueen has always been one of my favourite designers, too, and although the items are out of my price range for every day wear, I sometimes splurge on a item that could work season after season, for multiple events!

L.K. Bennett

Wedge

The royal fashion experts over at Kate Middleton Style assure us that L.K. Bennett shoes are definitely in her rotation. The duchess often selects pumps and court shoes, as well as bags, dresses, coats, and jackets by this designer. In this instance, though, I’ll focus on a pair of elevated jute wrapped wedges with tan leather straps. Priced under £300, these sandals are surprisingly affordable and definitely channel Kate’s easy fashion sense. Wear these anywhere a little open-toe shoe action is appropriate. Also, note that wedges are much easier to walk in than pumps, particularly after you’ve been hitting the Pimm’s – and they’re also perfect for stamping down the divots in between chukkas when you’re watching polo!

REISS

Print

With Kate being such a huge fan of the effortless ease of a flattering dress, especially now that she’s a mum of two, I’ve chosen another one that is reminiscent of her signature style. This conservative Carmen V-neck sleeveless dress by REISS is the perfect work-to-weekend piece. Pair it with a cardigan, polished pumps, and a structured handbag for a truly classy ensemble that’s perfect for the office, date night, and dinner parties. Blue florals prints are a favourite of the Duchess (think her ditsy blue Whistles dress she wore at the Diamond Jubilee Concert, or her Beulah scarfs in blue and white) – I can definitely see her in this with her hair up for a dinner out!

Emilia Wickstead

Trousers

Although we don’t see the duchess donning trousers very often, they are an occasional part of her repertoire, albeit usually in the form of skinny jeans. But there are plenty of Kate-fans who would love to see her make trousers part of her formal wardrobe, and what better way to start than with one of her favourite designers – Emilia Wickstead? These lovely high-waisted cloque trousers by Wickstead are perfect for the everywoman – you don’t have to to be Kate to find plenty of reasons for breaking these out of the closet. Excellent for an important meeting or dressier event outside of work, perhaps a charity or art gala, wear these with confidence. Pair them with strappy sandals and an embellished blouse for a more formal gathering, or with a simple silk tank and casual peep-toe wedges for a more casual get-together.

From dresses to blazers to trousers, these lovely garments are fashion forward and wearable at the same time, which is something I find so endearing about her style. I hope you’ve been inspired to start your own royal wardrobe with a few of my favourite pieces from a few of Kate’s favourite designers!

Friday Lust List: Alexander McQueen Reptilia Print De Manta Clutch

I’ve mentioned on this blog before how much I love McQueen’s De Manta clutches, which debuted in his final collection, Plato’s Atlantis in 2010. One of the final items designed by McQueen himself before his death, the python De Manta bag holds a special place in fans’ hearts, and was subsequently difficult to come by. However, thanks to the launch of Savage Beauty (the exhibition of McQueen’s work) at the V&A (going tomorrow, so excited!), the piece has been resurrected once more.

This is where my avid collector’s itch begins to bother me – although there’s absolutely no reason for me to own this clutch, as it’s not my style and doesn’t fit with anything in my wardrobe, I still really want to get my hands on a piece of McQueen history. I’ll have to reluctantly pass on this one, but if you’d like to partake, you can pick it up from the V&A’s own site here (priced £465). They have a whole range of Plato’s Atlantis goodies (in my humble opinion, the De Manta is the crown jewel of the entire range) here, as well as some gorgeous skull pieces here – which, as we know, is one of the things McQueen is most famous for. (I’m resisting the urge to purchase the skull bracelet here, considering I’ve just recently bought new Kate Spade and Stella & Dot bracelets!)

Anyway, I’ll leave you with my two favourite McQ accessories which I’ll be wearing with pride at the exhibition tomorrow – my ocelot print De Manta in twill, and some black suede pointed flats. If you want to find out more about how to see Savage Beauty at the V&A, follow this link for more info, and book tickets here!

We all have our favourite designers we like to lust after – for dreamy dresses and pretty scarves I love Temperley, for handbags and shoes I love Mulberry, and for structured basics and quirky jewellery I love McQ! I always have a look at The Outnet’s range when I get a chance, and so when I spotted this gorgeous navy skirt I had to share it!

Bag ‘n’ Shoes: Modalu Dickens Clutch and McQ Suede Pointed Flats

20140706-221408-80048659.jpg

Remember the big black leather Modalu Dickens tote I bought in the sale earlier in the year? The cute horse head envelope wallet is detachable, so I couldn’t resist taking it out with my suede McQ flats, also from the winter sale!

Spend or Splurge: Pointed Flats

After I posted a pic of my growing collection of pointed flats, I had quite a few people asking me where they were from, so I put together a Polyvore collection of a few examples at different budgets. A couple of the items aren’t the same as the ones in my picture, as they were last season’s, but hopefully I managed to find some interesting alternatives!

An ode to the De Manta Clutch

Ever since I booked my tickets for the McQueen show at the V&A museum next year, I’ve been thinking a lot about what to wear. Yes, it’s shallow on one level, but at the same time, as a fan of McQueen, I feel like it only makes sense to take something from the label with me when I go to view the exhibition – as a sign of respect more than anything. However, I have a couple of pairs of McQueen shoes, a skull scarf, my Swallow bracelet – but no bag. Like many people, I really love the knuckle duster box clutches, and I also have a soft spot for the Heroine bags, but they’re both out of my price range! When browsing through the collections online, though, I came across the gorgeous shape of the De Manta clutch, and decided that it would be the perfect bag to accompany me on my trip!

An ode to the De Manta clutch

The De Manta bag made its debut in Alexander McQueen’s final show, Plato’s Atlantis, in spring/summer 2010. The collection was inspired by the concept of mankind returning to the sea following an environmental apocalypse, and many of the most striking designs showcased silk screen snake prints. The python clutch in the top left is one of the final items designed by McQueen, and as such it’s a pretty special piece. The shape of the clutch is unique indeed – it’s inspired by the shape of the manta ray, and the two folded corners are held in place by magnets. To open the clutch, you fold the flaps out and the zip is free to open completely. I just love how simple this is, yet how elegant it looks!

On the right hand side is the ocelot print clutch in twill from 2012, which is much hardier and therefore more fitting with my lifestyle! Perhaps my favourite two clutches are the middle two (all of the final four are current season), which are perfect for spring and summer – the lace/crochet print (yes, that’s a print!) silk bag on the right is sublime, but the floral print bag is the one that really caught my eye. At the bottom, we have on the left a feather print design, and on the right, a patchwork design, both in a heavy black and red which suits a bolder colour scheme! All of these clutches are the large size (there are also ‘mini’ sized De Mantas) and retail at £325.  However, I may have located a cheaper, second hand ocelot clutch… More on that if/when it arrives!

What do you think of the De Manta clutch? Which one would you carry? And, do you own any McQueen bags?

Special Delivery! McQ Swallow Wrap Bracelet

20140430-154643.jpg
After I ordered my tickets for the McQueen exhibition at the V&A next year (see info here!) I decided to check out the collection online at the label’s website. Most of the items are completely out of my price range, but I did spy this beautiful dove grey leather wrap bracelet, priced at £45!

20140430-154821.jpg
It finally arrived yesterday and it’s a lovely, light accessory that just so happens to go with my grey Modalu Pippa bag and Mint Velvet plimsolls!

20140430-154928.jpg
The wrap bracelet comes in a black McQ dust bag with some tags and labels, in case you were wondering!

20140430-155037.jpg
They also use these cool little stickers to seal the packaging as well!

20140430-155112.jpg
The double wrap bracelet is really long on my wrist, so I ended up tucking the excess around the buckle, but you can play around with the placement of the straps a little bit…

The leather isn’t the sturdiest type I’ve come across, but the swallow charm is removable if you wanted to add it to a different strap…

You can find the bracelet online at a variety of retailers. Here’s the link to the item on McQueen’s site! (The next thing on my wishlist is a De Manta clutch! Aren’t they fabulous?)
