Calorie restriction: keeping those hunger pangs at bay

When I’m dieting, I try to stick to 1200 calories a day. I’ll confess, I sometimes go lower. The Fast Diet is a pretty well-respected method for dieting that sees subjects take two 500 calorie days a week, and eat what they like the rest of the time. In a more hardcore version of this, dieters can restrict themselves to 1200 calories on the non-fasting days. This was my inspiration for my calorie counting in the first few weeks of the diet. Hard, yes. Dangerous? I don’t think so. Unprecedented? Not at all! In fact, calorie restriction may actually lead to not just weight loss, but better health all around. (As I keep saying, everyone is different, and none of this information is being presented to you as my weight loss guide for general consumption.)

So, what works best for me? First of all, skipping breakfast. Breakfast is the Holy Grail of dieting. The advice used to be that you should never, ever skip breakfast. Eating first thing was supposed to kickstart your metabolism, and besides, isn’t there that saying, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and supper like a pauper”?

I started the day with a Pop Eye  smoothie – minus the protein powder as I’ve not got any! This was delicious anyhow – one of my favourites! It was blended spinach, a frozen banana, and almond butter – I skipped the protein powder and half of the almond milk. This came to 248 calories.

Smoothie for breakfast three days in a row! I quite like getting in my veggies so early in the morning, and today’s Lean Green Juice was delicious – kale, spinach, a frozen banana, two green apples and a lemon. However, I am definitely looking forward to eating something solid for tomorrow’s breakfast (bruschetta!) The calorie count for this was 313.

Another day, another juice: Orange You Happy. This was made with one grapefruit, two oranges, a lemon and some ginger. I only used half a lemon – too much acid in one glass for me, otherwise! Calories were 211.

Still feeling a bit delicate this morning, I decided to change my Breathe Juice from the original recipe of four stalks of celery, a cucumber, two peeled lemons and spinach. Instead, I used just one stalk of celery, plus an orange in place of one of the lemons, and I also added an apple for sweetness. It was still just 184 calories. I’d seriously love to invest in a proper juicer so I can blend these a bit better!

I told you guys that I was facing a pretty tough challenge – a three day convention that I had to attend for work. I knew I couldn’t keep a day by day blog of everything I ate, so my plan was to compile it all into a bumper travelling edition, which I hoped would contain some tips for anyone who needs to travel during The 22-Day Revolution.

I had a mini disaster this morning, because one of the two beetroots I’d bought for today’s juice turned out to be rotten! So, my juice was just one beetroot, plus an apple, a lime (no more lemons!), and a cucumber. A fairly decent portion for 155, although adding the lime really made it pretty sour.

Make sure you always read ahead on the plan, because sometimes you have to make some things the day before! Today’s breakfast was overnight oats – oats soaked in almond milk overnight, topped with flaxseed and fruit. With a banana on top, this was 325 calories.

Day 12 began with a big serving of Extra C Juice, packed with orange, carrots, celery, lemon and ginger. It was thick and a little bit bitter thanks to the celery and ginger, but I really enjoy starting the day with so many fruit and veg! Two huge glasses came in at 163 calories.
